Peace: The Idea

MapLog of WorldWalk

The Ivanics brothers: Ferenc and István—two Hungarian guys from Serbia—lived as a member of a minority in a war-worn post-communist country, and that is the best school to teach you how valuable peace is. And not only how valuable it is, but how hard it is to keep it: don't bother about super powers, don't bother about weapon bussiness, just focus on your own connections to people in your narrower or wider surroundings. The peace of small communities will lead to global peace. But how to communicate it? Many wise people are talking about peace, there are many ideas and theories about it, but words aren't enough. The Ivanics brothers wanted to find a better, more powerful way to express their opinion. A really big thing, something interesting, something amazing, something that will be well recieved, that makes pepole think about peace and to change their lives. A walking tour around the world seemed to be appropriate...

Walking Around the World

Walking around the world—it's so simple. You just need a couple of maps, a good backpack and a new pair of trek shoes every month. The WorldWalkers walk 15-25 miles a day, and after 5000 miles they aren't tough enough. It's a very rough lifestyle, from time to time they have blisters on their feet, from time to time they get know another part of their body that can transmit pain to their minds. They had to cope with different challenges in the Alps or in the Sahara. And if it's not enough, they have to find a place to sleep, to wash, to cook their dinner, etc. The idea is simple, but the it's very hard to get it done.

You can find an itinerary on their blog.

If you'd like to know more about the tour, read the summary of their experinces devided into sections based on continents and countries, just follow the links below or in the navigation bar on the left column. Or visit the WorldWalk Community page, to reach the WorldWalk blogs and the WorldWalk profiles in social networks. Also you can check the progress of the walking tour on Google Maps.

WorldWalk in Europe

As the brothers are European citizens, the first part of their tour—3000 miles—was a walk around their place. But as they got farther and farther from home, they had to face harder and harder problems. Hungary is a fresh member of the Eurpoen Union, Hungarians have to learn how to live in it, and how to survive, this was their task in Austria and Germany. France added the language problem, the brothers speak German, English, but not French. Spanish weather is extremely peculiar for Hungarians. So the Worldwalkers didn't have time to be bored in Europe. Go to the WorldWalk European Story page, and you won't be bored either.

WorldWalk in Africa

Africa is something different. The Worldwalkers have to face another cultural environment, another climate, another flora and fauna. Everything was unknown, strange, and potentially dangerous for them. They got to see everything, what a western tourist never sees. And after all that, there was the desert, the Sahara. Not even locals beleived they would be able to survive a couple hundreds of miles walking in the Sahara. But they managed to do it. And they learned a very important lesson, the lesson of the desert: if you are standing on a road with an empty bottle, the next car or truck will stop, and the driver will give you water. This brings great hope, a promising sign, that bringing peace is not impossible. It doesn't matter who you are, where you are from, what you think, people in the desert will never let you die of dehydration. Check out the WorldWalk's Africa page, it's worth it.
